KNJ PS Uniform Exchange is a grassroots nonprofit serving the 40,000+ residents of Kearny, NJ. Our mission is simple but powerful: to remove barriers to education by ensuring that every child in Kearny’s public and charter schools has the uniforms, supplies, and confidence they need to thrive.

Through our core programs, we provide free school uniforms and fully stocked backpacks to children across our community. In 2025 alone, we gave away over 500 backpacks and provided full wardrobes of uniforms to more than 700 children. We know that what’s inside a backpack matters—so instead of bulk-purchased basics, we carefully curate age-appropriate, high-quality supplies that any parent would proudly buy: Crayola crayons and markers, fun pencil cases, and backpacks in a variety of styles that let each child express their personality. For us, it’s not just about providing “enough”—it’s about giving kids the dignity and joy of walking into school feeling just like their peers.

Beyond back-to-school readiness, our “Ready Bags” program meets families during their most difficult moments—whether it’s the sudden loss of a parent, a new foster placement, or homelessness. These bags go far beyond school supplies, including personal care essentials, gift cards for food, clothing, and shoes, and items that provide both comfort and survival. They are a lifeline for children in crisis, designed to meet immediate needs while restoring hope and stability.

Every year, our annual School Supplies Drive is the heart of our work and our pride. We transform generosity from individuals and businesses into tangible tools for learning and empowerment. Families who walk through our doors find not only resources but also a safe, welcoming space where they are treated with dignity and respect. Our goal is that every child leaves feeling ready, proud, and excited for the first day of school.

As a small, local nonprofit, our fundraising opportunities are limited. Our Annual Bingo Night often serves as our only fundraiser of the year, and its success is critical to sustaining our mission. Your support will directly impact hundreds of children and families, ensuring that no child in Kearny has to begin the school year feeling less than their classmates.
